Remove an image background
Separates the subject from the background and gives you a transparent PNG. The segmentation model runs in your browser, which is unusual for this kind of tool: most background removers require you to upload the photo to their servers first.

- 2Wait for the first runThe model downloads from this site the first time you use the tool, around 11 MB, then stays cached for later runs.

Questions
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. The image is read by your browser and processed on a canvas in the page. It never reaches a server, so nothing is uploaded and no copy is kept anywhere.
What kinds of photo does it work best on?
It uses a selfie segmentation model, so it is strongest on people. A single subject against a background that differs in colour or depth gives the cleanest edge. Busy scenes, several overlapping subjects and fine detail such as loose hair are where it struggles.
Why is the first run slow?
The segmentation engine has to download before it can do anything. That happens once and is then cached by the browser, so subsequent images are quick.
Why is the edge rough in places?
The model works out a confidence value per pixel, and it is least certain where the subject and background have similar colour or where detail is finer than a pixel or two. Better separation in the original photo gives a better mask.
What format is the result?
PNG, because it needs an alpha channel to hold the transparency. Converting it to JPEG afterwards would fill the transparent area with white.
